PDP Presidential Flag Bearer Zoned To The North

The party (PDP) appears to have picked its National Chairman and its presidential candidate from the North and the South. The zoning committee headed by Governor Ifeanye Ugwuanyi is expected to make a statement on the allocation of offices during its meeting on Wednesday.

The governors of the South have endorsed the retention of Prince Uche Secondus as the chairman of the party. It was gathered that the other governors have also endorsed the same position. If the South gets the chairman, the North automatically becomes the preferred zone for the 2023 presidential ticket.

Wike argued that good hands can certainly guide the affairs of the PDP in every part of the country. He also argued that zoning the party offices may deny the opportunity to have the best candidate for the job at hand.

Were this to have been carried out, the party would not have been able to accommodate the various states of origin of its leaders. As a result, he realized that he was a lone ranger. He had no choice but to go with the southern extraction chairman as his colleagues criticized him. A national officer of the party, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated that the governors decided not to remove Wike from his position due to his personal interest.

A source close to Wike has revealed that the governor is aware that the 2023 presidential race will be difficult for the PDP if a southern candidate is chosen. A PDP governor from the North-East has argued that the party should field a northern presidential candidate in 2023 to defeat the All Progressives Congress.

Wike is said to be ready to work with his colleagues to retain the chairmanship in the South. Wike and the Oyo Governor, Seyi Makinde, are pushing for the emergence of Chief Olagunsoye Oyinlola as the next Chairman of the PDP. This is because they believe that having a northerner makes the party more progressive.

Former Minister and member of the PDP's National Executive Committee, Uche Nwosu, has stated that the party is not yet ready to state its zoning for the presidential ticket. The PDP would have to wait until the last minute to announce its zoning arrangement. The Peoples Democratic Party's Ugwuanyi committee will meet on October 9, 2018, to ratify the zoning formula for the 2019 presidential election. According to a source, the party would announce that it has zoned the ticket to the North.
