On Tuesday, 7th May 2019, His Marvellous Grace Support Foundation (HMGSF) did an outreach at The Potter’s School, Solebo Estate, Ikorodu, Lagos State on the topic of Say No To Child Sexual Abuse.
It was an interesting time of fun and learning for the pupils. Using sketches, songs, role play, short skits and illustrations, the pupils were empowered to understand the nuances of sexual abuse and how to stay away and be protected from the evil.
Speaking at the event, the Head of HMGSF, Dr. (Mrs.) M. Oluwadamisi Tayo-Ladega, encouraged pupils to always speak out whenever they experience or know someone who has experience any form of or potential sexual abuse - If you see something, say something!
Miss Esther Jemiseye, HMGSF Volunteer, took the pupils through the six Body Safety Rules, helping the pupils to understand private and public body parts, especially helping them call their private body parts by the actual names.
Esther used short skits to teach the pupils the appropriate responses to issues around sexual abuse, with emphasis on ability to say no, to run and to report, to continue to report until help is found.
Mr. Foluwaso Adebobuyi, HMGSF Volunteer, used illustration to teach the pupils the downside of abuse and the importance of protecting themselves from all forms of abuse.
The Question and Answer session allowed the pupils to make comments and ask questions, which further generated discussions that helped to allay their fears. One on one counselling for pupils who had concerns or issues that needed talking through.
Pupils were encouraged to be bold to speak up and to also protect themselves from people and circumstances that could expose them to abuse.
Parents should learn to listen to, affirm and encourage their children especially when the report cases of sexual or potential sexual abuse. Children are our future and they deserve the best we can offer.
