BREAKING NEWS: Nigerian Army Takes Delivery of New State of the Art Weaponry

The Nigerian army took delivery of weapons from the Chinese state owned defence company NORINCO in a deal that took the defence world by surprise. It is the most comprehensive weapons aquisition package for the army since the Shagari regime of the 1980s and transformed the Nigerian army into one of Africa's most lethal fighting force.
NORINCO delivered VT4  or MBT-3000 main battle tanks, wheel mobile 105-mm SH5 self-propelled howitzers and ST-1 tank destroyer.
Besides the impressive quality of the weapons acquired, of greater significance is the fact that Nigeria is the first country in the world to own these armored vehicles.


VT-4/MB-3000 Main Battle Tank
The VT-4 MBT is a 3rd generation tank in the same class as the U.S Army M1 Abram Main Battle Tank. Fire control system of the VT4 has a hunter-killer capability. This tank can fire accurately on the move. The tank is fitted with a GPS navigation system.




SH-1 155 Self Propelled Howitzer


The SH-1 self-propelled artillery system is fitted with an ordnance of an AH-2 155 mm/L52 howitzer. It is compatible with all standard 155 mm NATO ammunition, as well as ammunition developed by NORINCO.




A complete SH-1 regiment includes 24 truck-mounted howitzers, 4 battery command post vehicles, one battalion command post vehicle, one meteorological radar, 4 wheeled reconnaissance vehicles with 6x6 configuration and one artillery locating radar.



The SH-1 155 Self Propelled Howitzer is capable of direct and indirect firing. Maximum range of fire is 53 km with a rocket assisted V-LAP projectile. Chinese precision laser guided projectiles.
The SH-1 is fitted with a computerized fire control system, navigation, positioning and targeting systems. Vehicle receives target information from artillery command vehicle.




ST-1 Tank Destroyer
Keeping up with changes to modern armored fighting doctrine, the Nigerian military has invested in an 8x8 wheeled tank destroyer to replace its aged fleet of ERC-90s Sagae tank desyroyers. It matches Japan’s MCV and the US’ M1128 Mobile Gun System.

The main role of the ST-1 is to support combat units with its firepower. This vehicle carry out tactical reconnaissance and territorial defense tasks. It can also escort convoys and be used for road patrol missions. The ST-1 can engage main battle tanks as well
