Parenting remains an integral part of marriage- the joining of two parties together. However, before couples can become parents, there are phases or stages to be crossed.

One of the highlights of parenting is the psychological and economical preparations to welcome a new being- a baby; the fruit of matrimony. While these phases of pregnancy, antenatal, delivery and breastfeeding to some would-be parents may seem less stressful and demanding, to some other, it can be scary and challenging.

Needless to say, it's natural that, parenting styles of newbie parents would be markedly different, as well as decisions on the length of days, weeks, months or years of breastfeeding and weaning periods. It's save, however, to say that, breastfeeding is an integral part of parenting, especially for women.

Breastfeeding is an activity of feeding a baby or young child milk from the breast of a lactating woman. This activity is characterized by different biological variations in women, like change in breast size, the level of milk secretion, burgeoning pain around the breast and so on. While these answer the questions of physical implications of breastfeeding for women, the closeness and bond creation between mother and child are psychological aspects of breastfeeding.

Given the importance of a mother's beast milk to a baby's digestive system, source of nutrients, protection from infections and diseases, it becomes necessary to create awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and how it's necessary for a baby's development and growth.

This is why World Breastfeeding Week was earmarked by international bodies, such as WHO, UNICEF and other organizations in August 1990 to pay tribute to Innocenti Declaration in protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding across the globe.

The WBW is observed from 1st - 7th of August every year, with this year's theme as "Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding". The significance of this theme is to reiterate the importance of supporting both parents to be empowered in order to realise their breastfeeding goals and to espouse the inclusiveness of all types of parents in today's world, despite differences in cultural and individual styles of breastfeeding.
