ASUU embarks on warning strike from Wednesday


The Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) has declared that it would embark on a one week nation-wide warning strike action starting from Wednesday, November 16, 2016.

 The ASUU President Comrade Biodun Ogunyemi who made the declaration on Monday in Abuja, said that while the action lasts, there will be no teaching, examination and no attendance at statutory meetings of any kind in any of its branches.

Ogunyemi who expressed displeasure over the refusal of the Federal Government and the Ministry of Education to respect the spirit and letters of the 2009 Agreements and 2013 Memorandum of Understanding which it has with ASUU, stressed that they shall not surrender until the Nigerian University system is repositioned for transforming the country and global competiveness.

According to him; "Many aspects of the 2013 MoU and the 2009 Agreement with the Government have either been unimplemented or disparagingly handled. Issues in dispute are the payment of fractions of staff entitlements, funding of universities for revitalization, pension, TSA and University Autonomy, budgetary Allocation to Education and renegotiation of the 2019 Agreements.

"Activites of ASUU is meant to secure the future of the students, we have to sound the alarm bells so we can all be on our toes. We must all work together to ask for genuine change in this country".

While speaking on the rise of new universities, he said that the act of making University establishment a constituency project must stop as it leads to paying little or no attention to quality.

He also emphasized that two universities are enough to cater for the needs of the youths, adding that ASUU will resist establishing Universities to make a political points.

Also speaking, ASUU Trustee Mr. Oladipo Fashina said that ASUU has dialogued with the Minister of Education and the Government without any result, adding that ASUU will fight for the people of Nigeria.

He also noted that the decision to go on strike is based on the constitution of ASUU, interest of the Nigerian people and the interest of the Nigerian University system.
