Brig-Gen. Samuel Ogbemudia the two-term
governor of former Bendel State who showed governance with class and laid the
infrastructure for development in Edo and Delta States has died at 84.
Ogbemudia died in Lagos on
Thursday, March 9, 2017, at the age of 84.
The cause of his death has not yet
been officially disclosed but a source who would not want to be named said that
he battled with diabetes.
“It is confirmed. It happened last
night,” a source close to the late Ogbemudia’s family also said. Ogbemudia died
in Benin on Thursday night at about 11.00 p.m. reliable sources close to him
disclosed last night. Ogbemudia had a very successful military career, during
which he was made military governor of the former Midwestern State at the
beginning of the civil war. The pedigree he left in governance made the defunct
NPN to lure him into politics in 1982
upon which he emerged as the party’s candidate for the 1983 governorship
election. He won the election and served for three months before the Muhammadu
Buhari led coup truncated the Second Republic. Among his legacies was the
University of Benin, which he established at the beginning of the seventies and
which honored him with a doctorate degree.
