Nigeria’s Disease Surveillance System is working says Ifeanyi Nsofor

The ability of the Ministry of Health, their partners and other disease monitoring agencies in Nigeria to quickly pick up and take proactive steps on diseases of public health concern has been applauded by Dr. Ifeanyi Nsofor of the Nigeria Health Watch.

The commendation came while he was speaking at a press briefing ahead of the second edition of the Future of Health Conference holding at the Musa Yar’dua Center, Abuja on the 22nd of September, 2016.

While answering a question on the reemergence of the Polio virus in the North Eastern part of the Nigeria after being declared Polio free by the World Health Organization (WHO) last year, Dr. Nsofor said that he wasn’t surprised that the disease reemerged because of the security challenges faced by the region. He also added that it was a good thing worthy of commendation that the disease was picked up almost immediately and this shows that surveillance systems in the country are working.

He said: “For the Polio cases to have been picked up shows that our surveillance system is working so that’s a plus. We are also happy that the Ministry of Health with partners have already started immunizing children and doing all sorts of campaigns in that region to ensure that more children are immunized.”

Other panelists at the press briefing were Dr. Lawal Bakare of EpidAlert (former Ebola Alert) and Dr. Felix Obi, an expert in health policy research, analysis and communication. They also shared expectations for the upcoming conference.

The Future of Health Conference debuted last year and aims to chart a meaningful roadmap to advance Nigeria’s health sector. This year is focusing on how technology can help scale Nigerias’ health sector.
